Before you lie down

The pillows are placed before you lie down

A long table, two wedges, a body pillow and a quiet window. The pillows are set for your first position, and moved when you ask.

We ask how far along you are and how you feel that day, then choose where to start. Nothing is fixed: halfway through you can swap sides, sit up or ask for another pillow.

  • You never lie flat on your front

  • You choose the position, and can change it

  • Your partner can sit with you

A client lying on her side on a massage table, her head on a long pillow and a sheet over her, with a therapist's hands resting at her hip

Three positions

Side-lying, semi-reclined and supported

  • Most visits

    Side-lying

You lie on your side with your head and top arm supported and your belly held. Back, hips and legs are all within reach, and nothing presses on your front.

    • A long body pillow along your front

    • A wedge under your belly

    • A small pillow between your knees

    • A head pillow, and a second for your arm

  • Neck, hands and feet

    Semi-reclined

Half upright on a wedge, with your knees raised. Easy on the breath, and the way we work the neck, shoulders, hands and feet.

    • A wedge behind your back

    • A bolster under your knees

    • A small pillow behind your neck

    • A blanket over your legs

  • Back and shoulders

    Supported

Seated at the edge of the table and leaning forward onto a stack of pillows, or on your side with your back to us. The back and shoulders are open, and you can sit up in a moment.

    • A bolster to lean on

    • A pillow for your arms

    • A stool for your feet

    • A folded blanket for your seat

The pillow list

What is on the table

  • A long body pillow

Runs from your shoulder to your knees along your front, so your top leg and arm rest on it.

  • Two wedges

One under your belly, one behind your back, in whichever position we use.

  • A knee pillow

Small and firm, between the knees when you are side-lying.

  • Head pillows

Two, so your neck stays level and your top arm has somewhere to rest.

  • A lean-on bolster

For the supported position, with a pillow on top for your arms.

  • Linens and a blanket

A sheet and a warm blanket, changed for every visit.

About positions

Do I lie on my stomach?

No. You lie on your side or half upright, held by pillows. We do not ask you to lie flat on your front or on your back.

How do you choose a position?

We start with how you feel that day, how far along you are and where you would like us to work. We change position whenever you ask, or whenever we see you stop being comfortable.

Can my partner come in?

A partner may sit with you for the whole session if you would like. For a partner lesson, they join in.

Come and lie down.

Tell us how far along you are when you book.
